How Amazon FBA Storage Fees Work

Unlike fulfillment fees (which you pay only when a product sells), storage fees are charged every single month just for letting your products sit in an Amazon fulfillment center.

Amazon calculates this fee based on the daily average volume (in cubic feet) of the space your inventory occupies. The formula is purely volumetric.

The Q4 Profit Killer

Amazon is notoriously starved for warehouse space during the Q4 holiday rush (October 1st to December 31st). To discourage sellers from treating FBA like a cheap long-term storage unit, Amazon raises storage rates drastically during these three months.

• Standard-Size off-peak: ~$0.87 per cubic foot.
• Standard-Size Q4 peak: ~$2.40 per cubic foot. (A 275% increase!)

If you send 5,000 units of a slow-moving product to FBA in October, your profit margins will be completely wiped out by storage fees before the year ends.

Standard vs Oversize

Counterintuitively, the per cubic foot rate for Oversize items is actually lower than for Standard-size items. Why? Because oversize items take up massive amounts of volume, so charging $2.40/cu ft would make selling them impossible. However, because they are so large, the total dollar amount you pay will still be much higher.
