The Hidden Costs of Freelancing

Landing a $1,000 project on Upwork or Fiverr feels incredible, until the money actually hits your bank account. Many freelancers are shocked to discover that their $1,000 gig only translates to $600 or $700 in actual spending power.

1. The Platform Cut

Freelance marketplaces charge a premium for connecting you with clients.

• Fiverr: Charges a flat 20% on all earnings, plus they charge the buyer a 5.5% service fee.
• Upwork: Recently transitioned from a sliding scale to a flat 10% fee on all earnings, which is a massive win for short-term freelancers but a slight loss for long-term enterprise freelancers.
• TopTal & Braintrust: These platforms charge 0% to the freelancer, opting instead to mark up your hourly rate by 15-20% and charge the client directly.

2. Withdrawal & Conversion Fees

If you live outside the US, getting USD out of Upwork and into your local bank account is another hurdle. Using PayPal will cost you a steep 2.9% currency conversion fee, while direct wire transfers can cost $30 flat. If possible, use services like Payoneer or Wise to minimize exchange rate gouging.

3. Self-Employment Taxes

As an employee, your employer pays half of your Medicare and Social Security taxes. As a freelancer, you are responsible for the full amount (the "Self-Employment Tax"), plus your standard income tax brackets. You should always set aside 25% to 30% of your pre-tax net income into a separate savings account strictly for tax season.
