The Science of Sleep Cycles
Have you ever slept for 10 hours but woke up feeling exhausted and groggy? Or maybe you slept for only 6 hours and woke up feeling energized? This phenomenon is caused by Sleep Cycles.
What is a Sleep Cycle?
Human sleep is not uniform. Throughout the night, your brain cycles through different stages of sleep: Light Sleep, Deep Sleep, and REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep.
One complete cycle through all these stages takes approximately 90 minutes.
The Danger of Sleep Inertia
If your alarm goes off while you are in the middle of Deep Sleep (Stage 3), you will experience Sleep Inertia. This is that intense feeling of grogginess and disorientation that can take hours to wear off. It happens because your brain was chemically preparing to stay asleep, and the sudden awakening shocked your system.
However, if you wake up at the end of a 90-minute cycle (when you are in Light Sleep), you will wake up feeling refreshed and ready to go—even if you got slightly less total sleep.
How Many Cycles Do You Need?
Most healthy adults need 5 to 6 sleep cycles per night to fully recover.
- 5 Cycles: 7.5 hours of sleep (Recommended for most)
- 6 Cycles: 9.0 hours of sleep (Recommended for athletes or those recovering from illness)
Our calculator factors in the average 15 minutes it takes to fall asleep to give you the perfect alarm times.
